A television host recently shared a memorable story from the early days of her courtship, revealing a mishap that involved a car, a gas station, and an unexpected collision with a security detail.
During a recent broadcast, the host recounted an incident from a third date with her now-husband. At the time, as the daughter of a former U.S. president, she had a Secret Service protective detail. Her date arrived to pick her up in an older model vehicle that, unfortunately, was running on fumes.
“He was driving up to the gas station and said, ‘Oh no, I’m out of gas,'” she explained. “He thought he could coast it in neutral to the pump.” The plan, however, did not go smoothly. The vehicle rolled back, resulting in a minor collision with the Secret Service car that was following them.
The host was quick to clarify her role in the incident. “I didn’t hit them. I wasn’t driving,” she asserted with a laugh, noting that while there was no significant damage, her date was deeply embarrassed by the situation.
Reflecting on the story, the host connected it to her current philosophy on parenting and driving. She joked about her expectations for her own children, stating she intends for them to be competent and independent drivers when they come of age. “My kids better either get a license or learn how to take the bus,” she quipped, implying she won’t be providing a late-night chauffeur service.
The anecdote offered a lighthearted glimpse into the unique challenges of dating under the watchful eye of security personnel, turning an awkward moment into a fond, shared memory.
